My headlights are stuck open. I’ve removed the motor and I’m jumping/jumper pins 30 to 87a and 87. The motor only moves 87. Won’t run on 87a. In other words the motor is only turning in one direction.
Does this mean bad motor? I can’t find anywhere where it says it should turn in both directions.
Headlight Motor Troubleshooting
My pop ups occasional get stuck open, but if I turn the knob on top of the motor slightly (clockwise I think), then the motor kicks in and they close. Don't grab the knob as it starts spinning after getting unstuck, just twist with finger tips. I don't know why this happens.
If your knob is broken or missing (like mine), I use a finger grip socket seated on the hex shaft of the headlight motor (I keep in my glovebox):

The motor only turns in one direction, and is powered by 30. It stops in different places based on the relay input. There are contacts inside the motor which energize the relay for most of a turn, then on one contact it de-energizes when up, and another that de-energizes when down. When the relay is energized, the motor runs, and when de-energized, pin 30 is shorted to ground, which provides a braking effect to the motor. Pin 15 on the motor is powered when the lights are on, and cause the relay to be on and powering the motor everywhere but when they are up, where they brake in position. Pin P is powered when the light switch is off, which powers the relay which powers the motor everywhere except when they are down, where they brake in the lowered position. These go through the contacts to relay pin 86, which powers the coil.
If your headlights go up, but won't go down, check for power at connector pin P with the light switch in the off position. If there is power, then there is a problem with the contact ring in the motor. Clark's Garage has a writeup on disassembling and cleaning it.

Thanks for the replies. Will give the switch on top of the motor a try today.
Also good to validate the motor only runs in one direction.
I’ve read Clark’s write up. Took a little bit to sink in but I think I get it now. Out comes the multimeter.
