Joe Rusz (1938-2025)

"Joe Rusz passed on Thursday. And it wasn’t the pass I hoped I would be writing about: The one at 180 mph on the Autobahn, behind the wheel of a Ruf Porsche, flashing his lights as he came up on some slow-ass BMW or Mercedes driver, who was hogging the fast lane and thinking he was God’s gift to speed."

"Every air-cooled Porsche, everywhere in the world should shut off its engine for 30 seconds today, out of respect for Joe and what he not only meant to Porsche, but to the world of automotive journalism and mostly to those of us who worked with him at Road & Track."

- John Dinkel

I grew up reading my dad's R&T collection. Dad started keeping them in the mid-50's. By 1970 (I was 13), I was convinced that I needed a 911 as my first car. (Or maybe a Jag E-Type as a close second.) Joe's contributions to R&T back then were a large part of what convinced me. Godspeed, Joe!

Epilog—No Porsche or Jag for me in high school, sadly. My first car ended up being a big block '63 Galaxie 500XL 2-door fastback. Not at all sports car-like. First Porsche didn't arrive until I bought an '84 Carrera in 2011. Took me long enough...
