Sunroof issue

Hi,

We just purchased another 944 and the car is overall a very nice solid car. The only issue we have is with the sunroof. When I removed the carpet in the rear hatch I noticed right away that someone had messed with it. The motor was unplugged and the cable was pulled out from where it would attach to the latches. My first thought is to get the cable attached and then start troubleshooting. It is connected to the motor I believe.

When we plugged the motor back in and with the key in the first position on the ignition the motor didn’t do anything. With the car running the sunroof motor runs when the switch is pressed to lower it but not when changing directions on the switch to raise.

I know there’s options to make it a manual remove however at this time I’d prefer to get it to operate as it should.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. I did find some things online but nothing with insert the cable.

The circuit for operating the motor is particularly complex because Porsche wanted the open/close symbols on the switch to mean different things. The open symbol means open the roof with the ignition on, and remove the roof with the ignition off. These two functions require the motor to operate in opposite directions. The same is true for close and lock.

Revealing the mechanism in the roof is less work than it sounds at first (I just went through it yesterday)

I know the cable is out, but I would start by looking things over in the roof and make sure the cable guide tube is in place. Then you should be able to feed the cable through either by hand or manually making the motor work.

Also most of the system will not work unless something is pushing the front microswitch saying that the sunroof is in place. So if the system is acting weird, I'd start there.

Sure. Start by reading the items mentioned already in this thread. There is a significant amount of information about the sunroof system in them, and it will help you understand how it all works. You may even be able to figure out what is wrong after you ponder it with your new-found knowledge, gaining you both confidence and pride. Once you are aware of clarks garage, an amazing resource for 944 owners, you will be able to solve many issues your car may have (or will have in the future.)

If, after consulting those resources, and working on it for a while, you have not been able to get your sunroof working, come back and start your own thread about it here, describing your car's specific symptoms. Trying to solve two cars issues in one thread leads to confusion. Right now I don't know if your motor only moves one way, your cable is out, or both.

People here will be more than happy to help you help yourself. Your first step in helping yourself is to do a little reading.
