I attached playing cards using wooden clothes hangers on my bicycle forks so that I'd get sound from the spokes. (That was a really long, long time ago.) Does that count in this conversation?Tom wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:11 amA few summers ago, my high-schooler nephew showed up at my house asking for help with a 'mod' that was making the rounds via Instaface-tok or whatever.Throttlesteer wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 9:31 am Now if you could invent a nanny that could shut off other people's annoying exhausts. Of course, some things never change. Free mods and high-schoolers go hand in hand. I drilled holes in the muffler of my $450 Firebird back in 1978.![]()

One thing that annoys me about my 992 TTS is the burble ("Backfire" as Porsche refers to it in the owner's manual) when letting off the throttle (couldn't resist referencing part of your user name) if driving in Sport mode.Throttlesteer wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 9:31 am Now if you could invent a nanny that could shut off other people's annoying exhausts. To add insult to injury, the only mode I care to drive in is Sport so I'm stuck with the burble. Normal mode is way, way too tame, Sport Plus is fun but not really usable at all for street driving unless your 18 doing a rendition of Fast & Furious preceding your untimely demise. In all seriousness, I feel it's pretty rough on the entire drive-train to use Sport Plus for extended periods of normal driving. It's an aggressive map.

Agreed re Normal mode -- it's abnormal.

Let me know if you find a way to shut down the burbles but I don't think there is one. (Gold cert tech told me that Porsche didn't provide any way to eliminate it via reconfigured software either.)Tom wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:50 amblueline wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:42 amOne thing that annoys me about my 992 TTS is the burble ("Backfire" as Porsche refers to it in the owner's manual) when letting off the throttle (couldn't resist referencing part of your user name) if driving in Sport mode.Throttlesteer wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 9:31 am Now if you could invent a nanny that could shut off other people's annoying exhausts. Agreed re Normal mode -- it's abnormal.I'm fine with all of it except the transmission mapping, which will keep the motor at uncomfortably low rpms and lug the car around. It must be a gas mileage target thing. My truck is the same way. I'll have to confirm next time I'm in the car, but I 'thought' you could turn off the PSE sport mode even when you are in sport mode? The burbles don't bother me, but are kind of amusing on a computer controlled car. Reminds me a bit of the early electronic blinker sounds that tried to replicate the sound of mechanical relays.
I love the sound of the PSE, I just don't want the burbles/backfire which only occur in Sport. Deletion of those phony burbles are the only thing I want to get rid of. (A group of Porsche engineers probably spent research budget fortunes developing Backfire. Lol.)
Many aspects of Sport Plus are great, such as the downshift map, no burbles, unbelievable response, etc., etc. - Sport Plus is pretty wow! But, as I mentioned, it's not meant for most "normal" driving.
Have you tried Wet? Talk about a de-tuned drive! Painfully unresponsive. I call it Beyond the Valley of the Dummies mode.

The more I research the more the simple approach makes sense - I'd be interested.Tom wrote: Wed Mar 22, 2023 6:56 pm The harness itself would install in the engine bay just like the Track Nanny, but instead of having a GPS-based Track Nanny in the cabin, you'd just have this free-hanging selector with two settings: 1) factory stock, and 2) PSE valves always open. I'm thinking the rotary knob from the Track Nanny is a good choice so you can tuck this out of the way without worrying about inadvertently changing the setting. It would function much the same as the Cargraphics PSE controller without the remote control. Not sure I ever understood the need for a remote control to control car functions while inside said car....? The bigger difference would be the price, which would be about a quarter of what Cargraphics charges. Any interest?
For a stealth install I assume you could pass the wire through the firewall via the sound symposer port if you also include the block off of the symposer (I've heard folks that do the valve often disable that too, is that correct), and then route out under the driver seat and as you said leave it there? Any other firewall pass through points you know of?
FWIW I have a Boxster GTS 4.0, and the one test I did physically wiring the valves open proved interesting, though still something I would not want 100% of the time.

I think most people route it under the trim panels. See the Track Nanny installation guide, which would be very similar for the simple switch...

Yes, but I need to be out of warranty before I do anything that might cause the dealer to void it. So... treading water for now

Same for me, Normal is fine except for the PDK shift map. I actually prefer the fly-by-wire throttle map of Normal over the artificial over-sensitive map of Sport. And the exhaust burbles come with a significant fuel economy hit. So I normally drive in Normal with PDK in manual and use the paddles.Tom wrote: Mon Mar 27, 2023 10:50 amAgreed re Normal mode -- it's abnormal.I'm fine with all of it except the transmission mapping, which will keep the motor at uncomfortably low rpms and lug the car around. Like some others, I'd love to have a way to use the PDK Sport map in Normal, but I think that's not going to happen.
Back on Topic (sort of)—My 2018 Base Cayman predates when PSE was made standard, and it was not ordered with it. So my question is this: If I were to pick up a used factory PSE system to add to my car, what would I need to do to add a very simple switch like this to operate it? Nothing as complex as factory, just a simple "Always Open" or "Always Closed"?
