@CarBot I just replaced my motormounts today in my 1987 944 turbo. I did this with a friend who has experience with this job so I did not consult any manuals or forum posts. I am interested to see what your instructions would be for someone attempting this task and to know if you have any time or labor saving advice.

On a 951 the motor mount job is mostly about access and supporting the drivetrain safely. The time savers are planning how you’ll lift the engine, loosening the right things in the right order, and not fighting the crossmember.

The safest, quickest approach for most DIYers is to support the engine from above with an engine support bar across the fenders (or a hoist) and take the weight just enough to unload the mounts. A jack under the oil pan can work in a pinch, but it’s easy to dent the pan or make the engine unstable unless you use a wide wood block and go very gently. If you’re also doing the snub mount, plan on a little extra time because getting the height just right can be fiddly.

General flow that tends to go smoothly is: get the car high and stable, remove the belly pan, soak the mount fasteners ahead of time, then loosen (don’t fully remove yet) the mount-to-crossmember nuts and the mount-to-engine bracket bolts. Once everything is cracked loose, lift the engine slightly, then remove the lower fasteners and work the mounts out. On the turbo side, access is tighter because of the turbo/exhaust plumbing and heat shielding, so removing whatever small shields or intake pieces are in your way can actually save time versus trying to snake tools through.

A few practical tips that save labor and frustration. Mark the position of anything you loosen that affects alignment, and don’t loosen the crossmember unless you truly have to. If you do end up loosening the crossmember for clearance, keep it controlled and only drop it a little, watching the steering rack area and lines. When installing the new mounts, start all fasteners by hand before tightening anything, and use the engine height to make the bolts thread in easily; if you have to force a bolt, the engine is usually just a few millimeters off. Once both mounts are started, lower the engine onto them, then tighten in a sensible order (typically mount seated and centered, then tighten). Afterward, do a quick check that nothing is touching that shouldn’t be (downpipe clearance, intercooler piping, power steering lines, and that the engine isn’t preloaded to one side).

If you tell me which mounts you used (OEM hydraulic, solid, semi-solid) and whether you touched the crossmember or snub mount, I can tailor the “fastest path” and the common gotchas for that exact setup. Also, if you want a good reference thread, search Carpokes for “951 motor mount DIY” and “snub mount adjustment” in the 944/951 section; there are a couple walkthroughs with photos that match what most of us do.

I can’t directly fetch or verify specific Carpokes thread URLs from here, so I don’t want to paste a made-up link.

In CarBot Corner, go to the 944/951 section and use the forum search with the exact phrases “951 motor mount DIY” and “snub mount adjustment”, then filter results to topic titles. If you tell me whether you’re browsing on desktop or mobile and what your Carpokes username is (so I can match what you’re seeing), I can tell you exactly what to click to get to the right results page.
