glad to be back in the Porsche family after straying for a few years. had been driving DE for almost 20 years but finally got too old for the physical rigor at 69. I am 74 now. knew the day would come and decided to bow out gracefully rather than try to hang on like I saw a few folks do.
had been renting a garage to work on all my old P cars. sold all of them but an 87 924S I still hope to resurrect. next step is drop the engine to replace the bad auto trans flex plate and then everything on the engine. not planning to rebuild engine as it was running nice and no smoke. will also refurb the brakes and suspension, along with checking / replacing any other bolt on stuff that is suspect. even hope to rebuilt the AC. once back on the road will consider how far to take the cosmetic/paint refresh it needs.
will get back into it once the fishing and ultralight flying season is over. after leaving the other garage found a great little 15' X 30' in the basement of a small apartment building. the unexpected benefit is it uses hot water heat. there are three hot water pipes that run across the ceiling so even in the middle of the winter it is warm. have the 924S and my fishing boat and tools there. now that I refurbed my fishing boat the 924S will be my focus this winter. hope to have it on the road next spring.
over the past few years owned a BMW 645 convertible and a MB SL55 AMG. the MB became the maintenance nightmare the forums predicted. was a total beast, actually TOO much.
found an incredible 2001 996 CAB. 85k miles and PO had done EXTENSIVE work. including IMS/RMS, and a lot of other stuff. had intended to keep for a while but lost job and had to sell toy.
after DE got into flying, always wanted to do that. initially got training and bought a QuickSilver MX ultralight. hence my forum name. LOVE flying it. after some false starts decide last year to get a Light Sport License. have completed all training and ready for my FAA check flight. but the plane is down for maintenance, will take test once it is back in service. the FAA released new regulations for LSA removing the weight limits, so as of Oct 22 this year can fly Cessna and other similar planes. I am considering buying a Kolb Mark III rather than rent LSAs after getting my license. but I have to say I think my love will always be for the ultralight. like riding a motorcycle in the air, rode bikes all my life but sold the last a few years ago before it had the chance to kill or cripple me. open cockpit and cruising at 45 at 1000' AGL totally relaxing and FEELs like flying. the LSA planes are fun but like driving a compact car down the expressway. my wife of 47 years has always expected I would die in some violent way. scuba diving, motorcycle, DE track, and now flying. but with training and the mind set of 'don't do anything stupid', I think flying is less risky than my past activities.
so I will be lurking about this forum, looking forward to reading other posts and car advice.
dont have any good pics of the 911. will post once I do.
