Moving torque tube back

Hey Guys,
Forgive me if this has already been answered on the site somewhere but on a ’91 S2, does the rear suspension have to be completely removed to get the torque tube to slide back when replacing the clutch?
Also, the foam between the torque tube and the shifter mechanism completely disintegrated when I took the shifter, etc., out. Is this part (foam) still available or what’s the work-a-round?

I just received a replacement foam from porsche, so theyre in stock.

We unbolted the suspension and put it on jackstands and lifted the car with a hoist just enough to slide the tube out. Just make sure your brake lines and handbrake cable are loose before you drop it.

Later style torque tubes such as on your S2 normally do not feature the 4 hooks supposed to prevent it from moving front or rearwards in case of rear or front collision, and it is definitely possible to slide it backwards enough to get to the clutch. If I remember right it should be rotated 90° or something to move it back enough to get maximum clearance.

Theres a few different part numbers depending on the year, probably best to download the PET and have a look, it, its in section 701-00

I did not need to drop the suspension on my 86 either, just to do the clutch. And as nice as the new foam piece was, it made reassembling the linkage a total pain....

I remember once fitting a new foam through the gear shift hole (on a 924S). It was tight but came into place eventually. Accordingly I didn't glue it on the torque tube as it did not seem necessary.

I didn't know you were supposed to glue it? No way it's coming loose!

Loosen or remove the U-bolts for the exhaust hangers, then rotate the torque tube 180 degrees to clear the crash hooks.

Then remove the sheet metal cross-member that holds the transmission mount and fuel filter, which will allow the torque tube to slide back far enough to easily access and remove the bell housing from the engine.

Well, it is glued from new, supposedly to keep in place on the assembly line when lowering the whole shell onto the drivetrain and suspension. When the TT was replaced on my car a few years ago I just reused the old foam which was still in good condition.
