2.7 engine.
The 89 2.7 engine seems to be a bit of a mystery. Why go to the expense of casting the unique pistons and head for a short model run. Seems to me Porsche could have had plans for an updated 8v turbo engine, as the inlet ports are quite large. But perhaps Porsche decided a 3.0 8v turbo engine in the 944 would have been too close in performance to a 911 turbo.
Agree how interesting it is that they made quite a few bespoke parts that were sometimes for short lived models.
I've not directly compared but I suppose the 968 RS turbo was quite a deal faster than the equivalent 911 flagship of the day. Backtrack a few years with basically the same motor and it would have trounced the 911t even moreso. A 3lt turbo 944 must have been out of the question with regards to maintaining the status quo.

Haha...yes, I always thought that concept was mostly UK driven. I mean the S2 is a fine and dandy car. I've driven a race prepped one on track too. Easy as you like. Just a bit boring tbh.blade7 wrote: Mon Jan 15, 2024 4:06 pm If my 2.5 engine goes pop I'll do it. I guess that would also put to bed all the guff about the S2 being the best 944.
I've always thought the S2 was a pretender. A car for someone that couldn't afford a turbo, with reviews from testers that didn't know how to get the best out of the turbo engine. Sure there's no real urge under 2.5k revs. But the cheap and simple route to 280-300bhp transforms the car, and there's no comparison between an S2 and a turbo then.
