As promised in new member post. Found car for sale in Cannes with only 19,000 km on it in 1999. Special order for Dubai market (see Arabic door plate) as (?) one-off 4WD 993 Bi-turbo factory upgraded to GT2 specs. I spoke to head of engineering who remembered car and said I could never import car to US (different and longer story!), Drove car every day to work for 15 years but eventually convinced should take it off the road when offers to buy started to escalate (several calls from Seinfeld's agent!). Undergoing total engine rebuild and then relegated to show status only.

Amazing car and story! I was so inspired by it, I moved it to its own thread and started a separate 993/964 forum for the 3.6 air-cooled crowd. Hoping others pick up on the new forum too. :)

Thanks Tom for setting up a new forum for the 993/964 crowd. If there is interest, I can as you can imagine talk for ever about the car! As far as I can tell from talking to the factory, the special order placed by the 19 year old son of the sultan of Dubai was for a car with all the bells and whistles (sun roof, cruise control, 4WD, twin turbo) which was definitely not part of the street legal 993 GT2 package (see attachments), So the car started out as a 4S. which was stripped down by the race department and rebuilt (body, transmission, turbos, suspension) as a road GT2. Over the years when repairs were needed (although it was amazingly reliable given a daily driver), it became apparent just how unique the car is. On one occasion at a track event I came back to the parked car only to find a half dozen Cup racers all over it pointing out race equipment not usually found on a road car. My works mechanic tells the story of when he called Atlanta for a clutch, new throw bearing and shocks. He read off the gearbox serial number, there was a long pause, followed by " say that number again." "You don't have THAT gearbox on a car in your shop?!!! I'll give you $30,000 for it if you want to swap it for the standard 993 turbo unit. And BTW DO NOT EVER let those shocks out of your sight to be refurbished. Rebuid them yourself because you'll never see them again if you send them in." Many more stories to tell. As you can imagine it's been a really fun adventure owning this particular Porsche! And then there's the drive ........ for another day.

Wow, so it's a true factory one-of-a-kind. I started googling when you first posted it and assumed it was one of these:

I wonder why they didn't start with the 'normal' 993 Gt2? To get the 4wd? Is it Arena Red or ?? What a great piece of history. I'd be afraid to touch it, let along use it as a daily driver. I can only imagine the value of that car.

@Drew thanks for sharing. What makes this gearbox so special?

My understanding is that it's track hardened version of the G50, which was prone to throwing teeth if you skipped gears downshifting.

If anyone is interested in hearing about my year-long fight with DoT and NHSA to import car, let me know. I don't want to flood the forum with chit-chat, but lessons learned might be useful for anyone contemplating bringing in ROW car with higher compression ratio etc.

By all means! Carpokes exists for exactly that kind of info! As a resident of California, after anything and everything you went through, imagine adding CARB certification to the process.
