Only944 Shifter

I installed my only944 shifter with a new linkage, arm, and shifter itself, and despite what I had hoped would happen, there is still a lot of slop. The gears go in an out with a lot of notchiness to them, but when in gear or neautral there is a significant 1-2 in. wiggle either way. Sometimes I can't even put the car into 5th or Reverse because it hit the console before the gear. One would think it's because of my poor alignment skills, but it usually does go in gear perfectly fine, so it's an intermittent issue. My first though is the shift shaft that the linkage bolts to on the trans is worn and I need a new one because either the hole is waddled out or the spring is worn, but I want y'all's advice before I drop $1-400.

I had similar issues on my 1st attempt and rechecked to find that I didn't get the bolt on the left side of the transmission into the guide hole. Once I did, everything was perfect. So double check. Again!

Something definitely isn't correct if you have inches of slop. Mine is very tight in all positions.

When I installed both the shifter and short shift with linkage arm it really tightened things up. Did you get the shifter nice and centered before installing the linkage at the gearbox end?
