I recently bought one of these and wanted to start a thread to see if anyone here has any experience with them or is thinking about getting one.
I have about a month with it on my classic aircooled VW Beetle. So far I am more impressed than I thought I might be. The trigger is incredibly steady, the variance between cylinders is really good. I have never had a Bosch product this steady, only my Mallory Unilite was on par with the 123 in this regard.
I know many Porsche distributors are getting hard to find, parts to fix them are getting rare and many engines have been modified. On top of that the original curves were often designed with emissions in mind, not necessarily performance and drive ability. The need for other options is there and this is a simple path forward.
I have spend a lot of time fiddling with weights, springs and vacuum cans so I am somewhat familiar with what my engine wants advance wise and though the 123 adjustments are simple I do think they are enough to be successful. After playing with and enjoying another similar product however ultimately having too much trouble to make it worth continuing I am looking forward to continuing on with the 123.
I emailed 123 to ask about the rotor phasing. They told me that since there advance range is 45 deg and they use a wide tip rotor they set the phasing at 22.5 degrees, exactly in the middle. I also can see how their pickup design is adjustable for this when they manufacture it unlike some of the other options out there. This has satisfied my curiosity for now but some day I will drill some holes in an old cap and do the test.
That being said, anyone else having success with these and want to share lessons learned, best practice etc.
