I'm having to replace the 14 pin connector that connects to the relay board as it's cracked. Apparently that is why I lost power to the fuel pump. Just received the replacement from Sierra Madre. Any trick to getting the cover off? The last thing I want to do is crack that one as well.

If so, tread with caution -- they can be super tight! The warmer it is, the safer (and vice versa when cold). Maybe soak it in a cup of hot water, or warm it with a hair dryer (just don't melt anything...).

Be gentle and use a small, flat-head screwdriver.
Carefully pry up the small locking tabs on the long sides of the connector. Work your way around slowly, prying a little bit on each tab. Don't force it. Once the tabs are released, the cover should lift off.

Thanks. I was going to try the heat gun lightly tomorrow. Jeff Bowlesby said it should come off with a putty knife but that didn’t work for me.

New problem! When I opened the old connector to swap the wires over to the new connector, of course they all popped out of their holes. Not too big worry as I had already determined what went where. Except for two wires that I hadn’t anticipated (and have no reference for) They are grey (or possibly white with fifty two years of discoloration) with a red or brown stripe. I can’t find them on the Haynes schematics or on the Prospero one either. I presume that one of them is for the rear window defroster (not installed on my car). The other ???. Any ideas? The car is a 1973 2.0l California car as far as I know.

I think I have it figured out now. The grey/ spiral red goes to the brake light switch while the grey/straight red goes to the backup light switch on the gear box. It took a magnifying glass on the factory diagram to figure it out. AAARRRGGGHHH!
