Weird coating on speedometer face?

These cars......always seems to be 1 step forward.....2 steps back.
So - while I was fixing my trip odometer, I ended up ruining my gauge face (180mph speedo).
When I removed the speedometer to check on the trip odometer issue, I noticed the gauge face was "sticky". It seemed to have some sort of film on it. I accidentally left a finger print on it and it was very tacky/sticky. The best I can compare it to is the late 90's / early 2000's boxters and 911's that started to get "sticky buttons". I used some rubbing alcohol and a shop towel to try to remove my finger print and ended up removing the white, smaller / kph numbers from the gauge face.
What's really weird is that the larger, mph numbers are fine? Could Porsche have tried to use some weird sort of overlay when creating the 180mph speedo faces? I have a spare speedometer, but it's a 160mph unit. There isn't any sort of film/coating on that gauge. Unfortunately, the spare gauge itself is fried. I tried to swap the 160mph gauge face on my 180mph gauge, but it's not working properly.
I saw an older photo online and saw another that seemed to have something all over the face. Anyone have any idea? I'll try to update this post with a picture.

Note - I put the 180mph gauge face on my spare speedometer in the spare cluster I have. The bezel in my car (with the Carpokes 911 bezel kit) looks much better.
