I don’t have the knowledge to comment on the merits of this car.
All I can say is the 928 was the Porsche that got me interested in the brand as a high-school kid.
I would love to see one have a spot at Carpokes HQ

I love the 928.

Description is silent on rust and being a coastal car I would want to see a very good PPI. Also not clear if it has a full set of service records .

This is the twin of my car, albeit with about half the miles mine has experienced. I've turned down offers for more dollars than this one shows, but the 'real' market for them is mid-20's to mid-30's depending on condition and history. The manual gearbox cars in 1989 attract bigger dollars, especially the GT. For the driving I've done in mine, the auto box is a better fit for all but a tiny bit of more, um, 'spirited' driving.

There are undoubtedly some 928 folks local to the car in Seattle. Adam Birnbaum is the PCA special interest model something for the 928, and knows them well. Adam coordinates a regional 928 group there with a website/newsletter too, and likely know the car. His contact info is in Panorama. I can dig out some of that and ping him to see what he knows about it already.

If/when you get serious about this particular car and it's after mine comes from hibernation in April, plan a flight to PDX. I'll meet you there and we can drive up to inspect it together. Your initial screening would include getting the service history from the seller of course, plus any accident history, and of course a detailed physical inspection. After that, the same guidance applies to this as we would to any Porsche purchase.

The '89 S4 is the first in the generation to have 2.54 final drive, vs. the 2.20 that prior cars have. It rolls off in second gear if left on its own, but has a very quick but short-lived first gear launch available with a quick stab of the pedal, good to about 60 or so. It's also the first to have the digital display for a drive computer, and the last 928 without airbags. The little Christmas story I shared for the holidays offers a bit of a review about a similar '89 example 928 in real life.

My personal impression of the car is undoubtedly biased after almost thirty years with mine. For my needs, it's been a much better option than the early 80's 911 I had let go a few years earlier. The 928 is perhaps a bit 'unexciting' compared with that earlier 911, less frantic and with way less darty handling. The upside is that it's a supremely comfortable two-fingers drive at go-to-jail velocities. An all-day tour in the 928 leaves me relaxed and ready for more, while the same in the 911 would leave me a little beat up and somewhat exhausted by all the attention it demanded at similar speeds. Just different cars. Room for two sets of clubs and weekend luggage with the rear seats down too.

Also, it's interesting that it's a California car offered in Seattle. There's a reasonable chance that it's there to avoid the Cali smog-check requirements. I don't know if it's still available, but the Cali DMV used to let you search smog-check history online using a VIN or the plate number. Having it able to pass Cali smog will be important if you plan to title and register it at home.
