This question probably applies to all 944/968/928 variants.
There is one hold down spring per shoe. The rear hold down spring hook is easily seen by using a mirror from the inner side of the rear control arm. It is easy to see that the hook needs to hook over the visible lip.
On the front hold down spring there is no inner access hole to view the spring hook. There IS a hole in the front area of the hub, but it is a bit lower than the slot where the spring goes in. If you are supposed to view the hook from that hole, I don't see how, and it seems that the spring hook cannot reach that hole. Is the hook, when properly located, supposed to face up, down, forward, rear? Is it supposed to somehow hook into the front hole? It is currently secured, but if not properly positioned, it could come loose. Thanks for any input.

The youtube is a nice tutorial, but I'm afraid it doesn't really answer my question about the forward spring hook.

Can you post a picture or three showing where you are unclear? Maybe that would help me follow the issue better. I thought the video showed how it is all configured, so I must be missing your point...

One pic shows the rearward spring hook correctly positioned over the lip. If not positioned there, it could easily slip out.
The other 2 pics show the forward spring and Inspection hole (?). This hole is a bit lower than the actual spring, so I don't think the spring is supposed to hook into it, but there appears to be no way to make sure the spring hook is correctly hooked. The tension on the spring (spring height) seems to be the same as the rear spring, so it seems solid, but I don't know what it's actually hooking onto or if the orientation is correct.

On the 928, I use a needle-nose pliers to compress and rotate the outer end 90º to index the somewhat blind hook. The 951 brakes are virtually identical. Using that same pliers, it's easy to feel when the hook indexes, and also to test the hold by flexing and pulling some on the spring once it's in place. You can see the rotation of the hook from the outer end of the spring; it's what you grab with the needle-nose pliers, so confirming that you've got the 90º rotation is amazingly simple as you push and turn.

Hey Doc, thanks for your reply. just a nit, but does the 90 degree turn work with the hook facing toward the front of the car, the rear of the car, or does it matter? Or does 180 work? In the pic above, I believe I have the hook facing up (180). It seems solid.
