I finally got my exhaust manifolds off without breaking anything... and this is what I found. Can anyone tell me if these are damaged, or is this normal wear and tear for these things ? For the record, I never noticed an exhaust leak, but I haven't driven the car much since I got it.

Mine also had a few chips like that, but not as bad as yours... I just reinstalled them with new gaskets.

Never seen that before. Hoping someone recognizes that damage and explains how it happens? I can't even come up with a theory. As long as it seals, I wouldn't think it's a problem -- other than whatever caused it.

I looked through some old pictures, 'cause I remembered noticing it too. Found examples on my crossover. It's just part of the welds on the inside of that joint. Nothing to be concerned about in its own right, imo! Like Tom said, as long as it seals (and none of that seems to affect the sealing surfaces).

As for why it was done - I can guess, but it's just guessing
