08 Boxster AC

Greetings all.
I have an orange 08 special edition, not an 's'. AC quit. May need an evaporator core and case and was quoted 12 hours of labor, have to disassemble dash, etc. Anyone have this experience? The mechanic who diagnosed it, just from my description of what happened..., indicated this failure was uncommon. Could be 3K plus. Any comments appreciated. No rush, we rarely use it in the summer here in FL.
