When I was looking for my 993, it had to be a manual. Now that I'm getting older, I don't drive it as much because it is a manual! It's hard to get away from traffic around here and it's just not that much fun in traffic. While I'll probably never do this conversion, mainly because of cost, I would probably drive my car a lot more. Thats the whole point of the car after all, right?

Thoughts?

Being able to drive more and enjoy doing so is good but the cost and other intangibles of doing a swap like that would negate the switch for me. Then there is the downside of the 993 not being original as it was when built, plus the fact that the market for manuals is quite strong. That's my initial thoughts anyway.

Maybe look for a 911 w/PDK that you like and sell your 993? I know that is often easier said than done and that there may be other reasons for not wanting to let your car go, but it is an alternative to ponder.

I'm not really looking to replace the 993. The later 911's just don't hit me the same way as the 993. I'm liking the 992's more and more though. I just wouldn't mind just jumping in the car whenever and not even thinking about the traffic or route. I guess a tip would also work, but I haven't heard very many good reviews. I've also given thought of upgrading my current daily driver (2013 Jeep GC Overland) to 2022+ Cayenne. I like my Jeep (with a Hemi v8), but it's not a Porsche. The Cayenne might help scratch this itch.

I just thought it was interesting that some are putting a PDK in the 993. My 993 is mostly original, but if the cost was lower, I don't think I'd have a problem modifying it to PDK.

I hear you. 992s are wonderful cars (I love mine) but they're so different than a 993, a Porsche that if I had would be tough to ever let go of.

Regarding your Cayenne musings, we've had three of them, the first two "Turbo" (2014 and 2019) and now a new 2024 "S" that finally made it here last month following quarantine and long trip after being built. It has a bit less HP/torque than the earlier Turbo models but still the same 4.0 V-8 twin turbo, just de-tuned a bit. There's still plenty of power and it's quite nimble, especially for a large vehicle.

I will say that first indications are that this is our best Cayenne yet, not an unusual observation for a new vehicle, but still telling. 2024 is the first year for the refreshed 9Y0.2 and it features many differences from the prior 9Y0.1 such as greatly improved software, design changes that look good (the Sport Design Pkg is quite nice), performance improvements, refinements, etc. With the Sport Exhaust it sounds great too, even better than either of the Turbos did.

Maybe a newer Cayenne (9Y0.1 or 9Y0.2) would, as you mentioned, scratch the itch and you'd also get to keep that fabulous 993. It would be a win-win!

Is your 993 your only car?

Personally, I am never in the city or in traffic with my 993 or 991 GTS, both of them being manuals. Instead I am on back roads having fun and enjoying the drive. Although I have driven one, I'd never own a PDK.

True, but if that's the only option that will allow the OP to continue driving, then sacrilege it will have to be.

I'm not a purist, but I do tend to prefer original. The price is what makes this a no go though. If it was cheaper, I would probably do it, sacrilege or not.

Which (along with not missing the hot oil smell in the garage after every drive) is primarily why I moved from air-cooled 911s ('84 Carrera and '72 911T) to my current 718 Cayman. Once I decided it was time to go modern, I drove and considered both transmission choices, and decided I could drive either. I ended up in a used Cayman Base with PDK. That was almost 4 years ago, and I don't expect to make another change in the foreseeable future.
