Another fix, another issue found. ahh the beauty of these cars...
I was opening the floor panel on the passenger side to check the FQS position on the DME. While doing so, I looked up and noticed that some kind of white gear has broken. I'm not sure what part sits above the DME (on the side of the centre console), so I'm hoping someone here knows what this is, and whether it is important to fix.
Here are some pictures:

Sorry I missed this. I'll look on my spare heater console this afternoon and report back.

So I pulled out my now-spider-riddled heater core unit and looked for that cracked part. I could not find anything like it in that heater core, so cranked my head under the dash of my car and did not see it in my car either. Also looked at PET and eBay pics of those heater cores and can't see anything like that. Have you poked at it to see if it really belongs? I wonder if someone has been in there before because I think you are missing a cover that runs over those heater pipes. See pics below. Any chance someone wedged some aftermarket thing in there? Your car is an '86 turbo, correct? Maybe there's a difference on the Euro cars?

Hmm I don't like the sound of that. I'll check ASAP if the cover is missing and whether I can loosen that thing. Thanks for checking and both your input!

Update:
I replaced the DME and checked this mystery part again.
I could just pull it out and it's not attached to anything. It also doesn't look like it's part of the car, but is some kind of cap of some kind. It has the letters ARTE on it. Seems like a brand of some kind.
As for the cover, it seems like I'm missing it!

Thanks for the follow up. You had me stumped initially, but that's the only conclusion I could reach based on the pics. If you want the cover off my spare heater console, just let me know. Based on other recent shipments, DHL to you would be about $35 (and I'll throw in a FQS key) so maybe cheaper to get one locally....?

That's very generous of you! Thanks! I can't even find the part number for the cover so this would be a great help FQS key is also welcome!Tom wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 8:50 am Thanks for the follow up. Make sure your console has those three mounting holes for the cover (circled in my picture), just to make sure it wasn't a part they added mid-production or something. That said, I personally had to replace those pipes on my car, since they were crumpled and leaked at the firewall no matter what I tried, so very possible someone did the same on your car and didn't bother to put the cover back on.... PM or email me your address...Belgian951 wrote: ↑Thu Mar 28, 2024 9:03 amThat's very generous of you! Thanks!
