718 Life: A 718 on Pucks

Happy early springtime!

In the quest for easy garage work on the cars, my co-conspirator has invested in a couple of excellent pieces of equipment for his GTS' home.

The addition of a set of MotoMaster Positioning Jack + Wheel Dollies from Canadian Tire has made moving the cars in the garage a cinch. They're heavy duty and ergonomically excellent, and you really can put a car up on them in a jiffy and roll the 3000 lbs around with little effort (once you remember to take OFF the dolly brakes!).

The second garage upgrade comes in the form of a QuickJack 5000 TL, which performs exactly as advertised, making lifting the cars up to a nice useable height for polishing, wheel changing, underbody work, etc. a super-simple task.

The work we had to do to prep the cars for PPF application (hood / rocker polishing and chip repair) was made so much more ergonomically pleasant thanks to the QuickJack.

Because the cars sit so low to the ground (yay low centre of gravity), it takes a bit of futzing around to get the QuickJacks lined up properly under the mounting points on the cars, and get the rubber mounting blocks slid correctly into place to dampen the jack against the metal of the underside of the car.
Enter MacGyver. Remember that show?

With some PVC pipe and four hockey pucks, I made a solution that worked a treat!

Thanks to the Internet for the idea, with a bit of drilling, cutting and plastic grinding, I managed to make some reusable jack point mounting blocks that insert into ready-made holes in the underside of the cars right at the jack point, meaning the blocks are perfectly aligned every time.

No more futzing!

With those in place, positioning the QuickJack takes a matter of seconds, and one can be secure in the knowledge that you aren't going to lift the car at the wrong point or anything.
Just another fine little winter project, as springtime draws ever-closer.

Many thanks to Andrew for these excellent additions to his Cayman's home!

Two weeks to PPF day and then its drive time!

Thanks for the post, Luke - all we need to do now is double-up on the pucks to get the required height (we discovered that the thickness of one puck isn't enough to clear the metal edge around the area where the pad sits).

True enough, I missed that little detail...

I bought pucks for my QuickJack from Dan Tsuchiya in NorCal. His have metal locking tabs. Insert, turn 90° and they stay there. He sells via PCA, his own website, and Rennlist.

Nice....as Andrew said though, we have discovered that the thickness of one standard hockey puck is not enough to clear the edges of the QuickJack. You need about another 1/2 a puck's thickness. We are going to glue a second puck onto our solution and hopefully that will not be TOO thick to be able to get them under the car with the QuickJack in place.

Nice home made pucks! I was wondering if anyone has seen a bolt in, semi-permanent solution that would stay while you wanted it to so that you don't have to mess with positioning them while you are lifting the car, moving it on/off jack stands, lifts, quickjacks etc.

Cleverly, Andrew has discovered that with a wrap or two of tape around the vertical shaft, the pucks "stick" snugly enough in the holes under the car so as to not fall out. Presto!!! A simple tug releases them, and at some point, as the tape wears away, it's a simple job to re-tape. #win

The pucks I linked above 'lock' in place with a simple 90° twist. Twist 90° again to let them fall out.

Yeah, that 90-degree lock idea is a good one (better than my frictioned tape idea). I wonder if I can get my friend with a 3D printer to make that shape and then we glue them onto the top of our homemade puck/pipe assembly.
