I have a 2016 Macan S with 118 k miles. It was CPO returned lease with 34k on it in 2019. Over the last few weeks it has been making an increasingly loud taping noise from the driver side of the engine. It almost sounded like a diesel.I took it to a trusted mechanic and he found significant brazing on cylinder 6 closest to firewall driver side. The rest of the inspection was good. Needless to say I’m off warranty. I called the dealer where I bought it and couldn’t get an answer as to what could be done, although in my heart of hearts I’m certain I will need a new engine. Someone posted a similar issue earlier but he was under warranty and got a new engine. I even told the dealer I have a video of the scored cylinder wall . Anyway, I’m dropping it it off on 01/30 and I will get a loaner. I will post what happens but for now I would welcome any comments. Thanks, guys.

As this is an issue some others have experienced I would be doing some heavy forum reading and learning as much as possible. Best of luck !

Thanks for the link. I had seen some of those trying to figure out what was going on. I will use them on my dealership visit and see if Porsche does the right thing. I’ve owned nothing but Porsches for close to 30 years.

So I heard from the dealership. So disappointed. I do indeed need a new engine. The quote is 48 k. installed. A used one with 67 k miles would be 16 k plus 12 k labor = $28k. The warranty for the used engine? 30 days !! No help from Porsche. Any comments, ideas or suggestions are appreciated. Should I consider this a fluke or a frequent occurrence in Macans? By the way, my loaner is a 2024 Macan T. Totally underpowered compared to my Macan S.

Sorry to hear, I would reach out to Porsche directly asking for some form of Good Will based on your loyalty to the Brand.

That's tough to hear. I would agree with P_Coastal and at least try to see if any relief or help from PCNA.

Ok - now some advice that's based on a lot of experience and is also an opinion, so please take it as such.

See what kind of money the Macan is worth on a trade. (It won't be much due to the bad motor but it will be something.) Rather than spend $48k for a new motor (and it might end up more for ancillary deficiencies that rear their heads) on an 8-year old vehicle with 118k miles, I'd consider a new Macan S. The S starts at $74k and has good power (375hp 3.0L). Play with the configurator. If you keep the build in line you're halfway there (or more) using that $50,000 that you'd spend on a new motor for an older vehicle that would still be without any warranty outside of that new $50k motor.

Maybe your dealer will help with a decent allowance while also discounting a new Macan. Discounts on new Macans are pretty easily obtained. Who knows, they may have one in inventory that fits your needs. If it's been there more than a month, they'll gladly work an excellent deal I would think. They might even go several steps further as a way to keep or further build brand and dealership goodwill.

Personally, I would never throw that kind of money for a motor on a vehicle like a Macan. You can buy a used 2016 Macan S with far fewer mikes for under $25k. (Used is a consideration for you too, depending on your situation.)

To further accentuate the picture, as I write this, I'm seeing listings for 2016 Macan S models with over 100k miles for $20k and under. If you spend $48 on a motor, you'll end up with a Macan S worth $20 - $22k. It's just not worth spending anywhere close to $50k on your crippled Macan.

edit: and $28k for a used motor with a 30-day warranty? Not even a consideration in my opinion.

An update. I placed the Macan on eBay for $2k starting bid and it’s been a week no takers ( more accurate 1 bid then retracted.) I called PNA and they said they couldn’t help; they put me on hold and called the dealership and the best I got was no charge for the inspection, and they detailed the car 😂. My local mechanic is willing to put in a used engine with 50 k miles on it and 3 months warranty for $14k. And that’s where I am. I appreciate all your comments.

Sorry that you got no help from Porsche but honestly, it's not unexpected considering everything (miles, year model, etc.).

However, your latest remedy works wonderfully! Spending $14k for an installed 50,000 mile motor is excellent, assuming all goes well. And you won't be underwater value-wise either.

Thanks. It’s really the only way I could see out. The question is: do I sell it after the re-do…. Or keep it? Was this a fluke? When I was at the dealership I got to speak with the technician and he said they’ve never seen this, although coincidentally he was working on a 2014 Panamera with 88k miles with the same engine, same problem. So it’s no longer “never.” Still not enough for Porsche to put out a service bulletin or extend the warranty, like they did on my Macan’ s Tranfer case.
