One of the drivers I interviewed for the 000 article mentioned that gearbox. He wasn't a fan. I see if I can find it in the morning.333pg333 wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 6:06 pm That last picture piques my interest Michael. Do you know what the gearbox is? When viewing the incar video it really sounds like they have straight cut dog engagement gearing as he is able to shift very quickly. Maybe flat shift? I'm trying to source something for my car that will offer equally quick shifts while minimising boost loss. The video:
I was advised that the driver is a Colin D. Apparently they were having some issues and he wasn't driving super quickly.
Project status....

Thanks Tom. I've subsequently been advised that it is a Hewland gearbox mated to a 928 torque tube. He definitely seems to still be shifting in an H pattern so I would think it is a straight cut / dog engagement setup.Tom wrote: ↑Fri Feb 02, 2024 7:30 pmOne of the drivers I interviewed for the 000 article mentioned that gearbox. Not sure what they didn't like about it. Seems really nice to me. Quick and concise. What more could one ask?

Gearbox is a Hewland DGB 5 speed. Yes, dog box allowing quick shifts. Some wondered why Klem or Holbert didn’t use a Porsche box like that from a 962. A DGB might serve you well,

The quote I was thinking of is actually reproduced in the 000 article. It was from Alan Johnson, who had a dealership and race team back in the day and owned the chassis No. 4 (with the misspelled PORSHE VIN plate). Here's what he said:
"Number one, they made a mistake with the selection of the transmission. It was an English transmission. It had a huge collection of gear ratios, but it was extremely difficult to work on and it was difficult to shift. It was a cog type transmission without synchromesh. I was very, very negative on the transmission. It’s really sad, because Porsche had
a great transmission in the 962. They had a great transmission, it would absolutely take the horsepower of the 944 GTR—but they chose to get the transmission out of England."

Looks like the gearbox is driving something, likely an alternator? Is it driving anything else or just the alternator? Any pics of that setup?
Some strong sounding comments against the "English" transmission there! Sounds like a little bit of Porsche/German elitist bias, maybe not so surprising coming from a Porsche dealer. I don't doubt that the 962 had a better box, but England is no slouch when it comes to quality gearboxes...

If I recall, the alternator is driven by a belt on the axle and/or axle flange.
I'm a cynic, but did not consider the "if it's not German, it's terrible" mindset. Could be. Although Johnson is probably an English sir name, so hard know for sure...
A car dealer was second guessing Porsche .Tom wrote: ↑Sat Feb 03, 2024 2:53 pm The quote I was thinking of is actually reproduced in the 000 article. In fairness, he was much more than a Porsche dealer...
