Early 944 odometer gear replacement wizard out there?

Hi Gang,

Next up for my 83 944 is the dreaded odometer gear fix. My odometer has been working intermittently for a while now (works for the first 10-20 miles then stops working) so I figured I'd reach out to the group to see if anyone has a nifty pdf like the one CP has for the older models. Clarks Garage has a nice write up to get to the gauge cluster which is pretty straight forward, but it's the next steps I'm interested in. If anyone has a write up, would love to get a copy of that.

While I have the gauge cluster out, I plan on replacing the bulbs. Are there any other items I should think about doing while the cluster is on the bench?

Thanks
Ralph

Hey Ralph, a bump for your thread to keep it in the limelight. Someone here will a have some thoughts and ideas on your odometer question - just needs a bit of time!

I don't have first hand experience with the early odometers, but it's my understanding that the gear is just a press-fit on the shaft and that it gets loose over time. That's probably what is happening with yours -- it sometimes grips the shaft and sometimes slips. You can 'try' gluing it back to the shaft, but it you go to all the trouble of taking it apart, you might as well put a new gear on there. I poked around after your PM this morning and found this from @944online -- great write-up from a great 944 vendor. :)
