What did you use to power the jumper in the fuse box? I'm not a 986 expert, but on my car the fuse box jumper just powers the switch (and is not an extension of the battery posts). So you most likely need something other than a battery tender to power it, since most battery tenders will not deliver power unless it detects a battery. So, bottom line, you need to use a spare 12v battery, or an old-school battery charger that supplies a constant 12 volts, or have a battery tender where you can turn off the battery detection safety system, or jumper cables from another car, etc.

This might not help for your 986, but here's a screenshot of my owners manual's instructions for a 718 Cayman with the same situation as yours:

On the driver side wheel well, reach over the wheel and run your hand vertically just behind the top of the wheel. You will feel a cable. Pull the cable. It will open the Frunk.

I ended up with the same problem on my 987.
The car was new to me and I was stuck at a hotel…I used an external battery jumper unit on the fuse box/circuit breaker post. It wasn’t enough to power my switch along the door, but after numerous attempts, I used the unlock button on my key and that opened the frunk. Just dumb luck and exasperation that it worked.
From there it was just a matter of replacing the battery with newer and bigger!
Might be worth a try, best of luck.
