Looking to put back the original radio in my 87. Which is either a Blaupunkt Reno or Charleston (if anyone has their old one they wanna sell please let me know!).

I am wondering how it mounts. My current radio, some JVC CD player, has a tray and tabs and a face place and bezel and all kinds of mess. How is the original radio supposed to mount? On a metal tray or with a cradle of sorts?

I recently re installed my Blaupunkt New York in my 86 NA. This was the original radio/cassette. I installed a bluetooth adapter on it and wanted the original look of the radio. The original install had a metal frame that clicked into the console/dash space then the radio slides into that and clicks in with spring tabs on both sides. To remove the radio there are 4 small holes, 2 on left and 2 on right of radio face that you push a removal tool into to depress the spring tabs to allow removal. If you don't have the tool, finish nails work just as well.

The Reno, at least in my 928, installs pretty much the same way. The original shallow DIN mounting sleeve came with a ribbon contact for the alarm system. Slide the radio out, the ribbon contact loses touch with the grounded radio chassis, and horns start honking. There's also a rear (towards front of car...) bracket to carry the weight of the radio chassis.

In my quest to maintain originality I left all the original harness connectors in place, and added all new cabling and connectors for the now not-quite-as-ancient Blau Alaska head unit currently living in the car. The original Reno got new rubber bands for the cassette drive, but twenty-some storage years later they are probably shot without turning a capstan. It is carefully packed in a sealed bag with dessicant, waiting for the perfect market moment when having a numbers-matching radio in an almost prehistoric vehicle will add a few $million in value. The Reno is an interesting unit, has no low-level input or output capability at all, not close to mechanically or electrically robust. But it is what came in the car.
