Thought I would post my list of maintenance items I started working on last weekend. This is on my 1986 turbo I acquired in 2015 from the 3rd owner. I had not driven it much since the March 2020 covid lockdown and was building my workshop, too. This is an interesting car as the owner also raced a dedicated 944 turbo in Central Florida and kept this car 100% stock/original. As I have started taking things apart, I am finding almost everything (heat shields, fasteners, etc. ) are there and original. That is in sharp contrast to my first 86 951 that I purchased in 2003. That car was a one owner (by a Dr.) who took it to a variety of garages and was missing heat shields, brackets, some fasteners. I still have that car as well but the timing belt failed in 2016 and is waiting its turn. Still have not decided if I am going to repair the engine but I have resisted any urges to use it for parts.
Here is the list in no particular order:

• Starter
  Timing/balance belts and associated seals
  Cam and oil pump seals
  Brake hoses and fluid flush
  Water pump and all coolant system hoses
  Turbo water pump
  Motor mounts
  Speedometer/odometer
  Front struts/rear shocks
  Injector cleaning/test
  Venturi delete/vacuum lines (yes, it still has hose mess)
  Exhaust system

I am also considering adding a EBC to eliminate the CV.

You might also consider changing the trans mount in the rear as they deteriorate with time. I followed a mod from other forums in filling the voids with urethane to make it more rigid than stock but no where near what a truly rigid mount is like regarding noise and vibration transmission. I noticed an improvement in crispness of lateral transition from the rear after the change.
Just remembered I had my intercooler cleaned out and got a lot of oily mess which couldn't be helping so that could also contribute to the refresh.

Here are a few other items that came up along the way after getting my 951
-Fuel filter
-Oil/filter
-Tie rods / tie rod ends
-Front and rear sway bar bushings
-Power steering pump rebuild if leaking
-Rebuild steering rack - sprung a leak a year after the pump rebuild
-Check the front control arm bushings/blocks/ball joints
-Transmission oil
-Check replace/oil cooler hoses (redo the seals on the engine side as well)
-Thermostats while you have the water pump out

If it has original fuel lines under the hood, I would put that at the very top of the list. At this point, most of the original ones have cracked or are are on the verge. Seems like every month someone loses a car that way online.

I will inspect for the items suggested. My initial starting philosophy was to do basic maintenance and had started with oil/filter and then was only going to replace the timing/balance belts as they were >5 years old. Once I started taking covers off, I started assessing other items and concluded it was time to take care of things. I will go check out the workshop thread.
