Seems all the 10w50s available up here are labelled motorcycle oil (other than Porsche dealer version)

What makes them appropriate for bikes instead of cars?

The technical chemistry is way above my paygrade, and I'm far from an expert.... But as I understand it, on motorcycles, the engine and gearbox often share the same oil -- so they formulate motorcycle oil to handle both tasks. I wouldn't use it in the 944...

Would a 5w-50 synthetic work?

Based on experience (and my opinion), I feel that Amsoil synthetics are among the best available anywhere. They have a fantastic 5w-50 synthetic in their top-of-the-line Signature Series. I used Amsoil's 15w-50 Dominator Racing oil for over 10-years in an LS7 race/track car. Phenomenal product.

Amsoil does ship to Canada. Pricing would be based on exchange rate I'm sure. Amsoil's not cheap whether US or Canada. However, here's the info for Canadian customers:

Amsoil has several motor oils listed for specifically for 1988 944s. Four different motors, actually. Not sure which motor you have but I am assuming it's a Turbo. (FYI, I know nothing about 944 engines.)

None are 10w-50 however as I don't believe Amsoil refines a 10w-50.

I see it now.. I had selected the first "Turbo" option which returned nothing


Their recommendations are similar to other brands which usually give 10w40 or 20w50. I guess their "10w" is a "5w".

Looks good but yes, expensive!

And often the wet clutch too.

Dan just an FYI there is a Millers Oil distributor in Ontario. They run 944’s I believe.
There is also a Millers rep in Calgary who I buy from.
20/50 10/50 and 10/60

I run 20/50 living in Calgary and climate is colder than your location.

Joe Gibbs Driven oil has an oil available for our engines too.

A decent Motorcycle dealership could also order you in non motorcycle Motul oil as most dealers sell Motul.
