I saw earlier in this thread a comment about how well these stick to PPF. My new car goes in for full PPF in a week. Should I go ahead and mount the brackets directly to the paint or wait and mount on top of the ceramic coated PPF?

My answer and opinion is to most definitely wait. If you are doing a full PPF and if it is being done correctly, the installer will be pulling off all emblems, trim pieces, light assys, etc. to be able to apply the PPF without cutting around objects. That would definitely include your license plate mounts if they are putting PPF in that area, so you'd have to reinstall them somehow. (The 3M tape would have to be replaced or else you'd need a new set of mounts.)

It's expensive to do a full PPF properly. I wouldn't want any installer cutting corners by trying to cut around stuck-on objects.

On my car, we opted not to put PPF where the license plate goes, so my mounts are directly on the paint. On my prior 991, I had the car fully wrapped before thinking up these mounts, so put the mounts over the PPF. The 3M tape sticks like crazy to both. Definitely do not put them on the car now with the plan of removing them when you do the PPF. They really are intended as a permanent installation. They are not easy to remove at all, and you'd need to replace the tape for sure. 3M advertises the tape as "an excellent alternative to rivets" to give you the idea.

Couple other thoughts: if you put them on top of PPF and ever need to remove them, you'll need to take great care not to pull the PPF off the paint when removing the mounts. The mounts stick to the PPF way stronger than the PPF sticks to the paint. Also, ceramic coatings vary so I can't say for sure how well the mounts will stick on top of your ceramic coating. I'd be inclined to not put the ceramic coating where the mounts go, just to be safe.

Many PPF guys are familiar with the 3M tape. When they remove factory badges and emblems, they often use this tape to put the badges/emblems back on over the ppf. That's how I learned about it. Here is a link to the actual product, which you can find on amazon and/or good auto parts stores, if you want to test it before deciding.

Tom, if you recall, that particular 3M tape, while outstanding for a great many applications including your license plate mounts (I use it a lot), is probably too thick for emblems. It doesn't look OEM because it makes emblems stick out quite noticeably. There are discussions regarding the dilemma on various automotive and PPF forums.

My PPF guy's no-longer-secret product that I commented on somewhere on Carpokes last year is awesome. It's also a 3M product but is a super thin dot matrix product, that's super strong, doesn't require cutting or trimming (something almost impossible to do with the tape if attaching detailed emblem lettering for instance), and is invisible.

It's 3M's Press-In-Place Emblem Adhesive.
