What did you do with your 718 this week?

Installed a new driver side axle yesterday. The outer joint developed play after me running it low on grease so many times. Long story but struggled with this axle for some time now. Decided to replace it last fall but there were none available so I installed a new boot and new grease again and completed my track season. Now with summer track season is on hold so it is maintenance season here in the desert and axles are in stock again.

Edit: attempted to add a short video .mov of me showing the slop in the joint but that is an unsupported format.

Bought a digital torque wrench and went around and torqued all the suspension and chassis bolts I have had apart over the last year, I found that oddly satisfying.

Chasing a 3.5-5k RPM rattle from the back thats been driving me crazy for months.

First time I’ve pulled all the trim and carpeting.

Nice to finally see the engine!

The noise was coming from the plastic around the oil port... I added some material and now its silent. For the life of me, I cant understand how it doesnt make crazy noise in all the cars. Its hard plastic, connected directly to the engine that has plenty of play to just move around and vibrate against itself?!?

Great to see that you undertook the quest but even better is that you found the source of the irritant and got it corrected! I've had a similar on and off unsolvable irritant in the GT4 since it was new. It comes and goes - maybe you've discovered the source for mine too.

I always wonder how designers and engineers of cars, especially higher end cars, overlook the seemingly obvious sources of potential irritants like that. The hidden ones I can understand but overlooking relatively loose plastic against metal that's motivated by an attached reciprocating motor is an eye roller to me.

Maybe I'm being too harsh.

I also have a noise back there however I have not figured out where it is coming from. I had the rear trim quite a way apart when I was installing the B16s and required PASM cables so at this point anything is possible. Still, starting with a known solution is a good start.

I had a new set of track tires mounted today. I stuck with the known formula of 255/285-35-19 Bridgestone Potenzas but this time I moved from the 71RS to the latest model 71RZ.

I have been having trouble with the TPM sensors leaking on my OZ wheels. The manager at Discount Tire says the tire stem hole is smaller on these wheels than most and the seal is not seating properly. Thinking about drilling them... need to do some research.

I just looped a zip tie through it… that seemed to snug it up so it no longer rattles but isnt locked down tight, just in case it is supposed to have some play?

This is not the final placement, but it was when I was experimenting with whether the tie would make a difference. I didn't want to just wedge something in there and hope for the best long term and the zip tie seemed like it was enough material but also would stay put.

I've been running the Hoosier Track Attack Pros for the past two seasons and am thinking of giving the new RE-71RZ tires a try. I don't imagine you've had a chance to get on track with yours yet and I haven't seen any feedback from others since they are still pretty new. I'm wondering how they compare to the RE-71s and am mostly curious how they would match up to the Hoosiers (and the MPSC2s). Pricing for the RE-71ZRs are better by about $250 per set vs the Hoosiers.
