It's a little hard to tell from the pictures but the new wheel is not nearly as shiny as the old one, but I guess that's the patina from use. Since both our 944s are Guards Red, I just ordered another one for the 951, which also currently has the 968 CS type. Either of these steering wheels fits fine on an airbag car after you remove the clock-spring. You can use retainer plate, 928-652-104-01 to get the horn working.

However, for an airbag car if you want to replace a faulty multifunction steering wheel switch I'm not sure how to remove the rubber accordian trim piece unless you cut it. Therefore, I purchased a couple of non-airbag all-plastic covers, 944-552-373-00 on eBay [this is what's molded into the part, but I think it's probably 944-552-373-21-01C for M454 option in black]. They are being delivered today; hope they fit correctly.

I'm constantly debating with myself over a 968 CS Wheel. I had one on my 944S and loved it. The smaller diameter definitely made a difference in the steering feel and it was the perfect thickness. That being said, people around here drive like morons and even though the airbags are over 35 years old.....I still think having one is better than not if the worst happens....

It is easy to tell. Thats why I like it more. I prefer the matt fresh leather look. I work hard on my cars for cleaning the leather work to keep OEM and matt :) The first 944 I viewed to buy had the same wheel. Sadly that was the only good bit of the car!

May I ask what it cost to have the wheel recovered? My 86 non airbag wheel is void of its wrap. I'd love to thicken it up and have it look nice.

For non-airbag cars, or those with airbags that want a non-airbag steering wheel, the Sport Steering Wheel from Porsche with the red stitching is $802.60 from https://www.sunsetporscheparts.com/sear ... -084-158YR. I paid $845.60 from Harper Porsche, which was cheaper than Sunset since Harper doesn't charge sales tax and they currently have a 15% discount on shipping. Mine is coming from Germany, but I believe they are made in Italy.
