I had the same experience. DT40 is expensive but worth it.

I use Porsche Classic Motor oil, specially formulated by Porsche for Air Cooled 3.0L and above.
My 911 told me she loves it !

I have an 03S and use DT-40 5W/40. I do an oil sample with each yearly change and the numbers look great. I purchased the car in 2017.

DT40 is an oil that was invented via collaboration between Jake Raby/Charles Navarro/Lake Speed Jr . Somewhere in that mix Joe Gibbs Racing was involved . Some would consider it a boutique oil but it was specifically designed for the 986/996/987/997 series of engines .

My two cents. I run Driven DT 40 in my 03S. The PO used it so I continued. I have owned my Boxster for 7 years now and all my oil reports have been spot on. My Boxster is a limited use fun machine for the street. I do not track but I REALLY enjoy the NC mountains.

We all have favorites, but for your use case, nearly any major brand will work well, just change it every 18 months or less.

It might not be a great comparison but in my 968 and 944 turbo I use Valvoline VR1 20-50 racing oil and add a bottle of Liquid Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive for the 944 Turbo to quiet the lifters. I started using the VR1 years ago when my turbo started using/burning a quart of every 500 miles. When I changed to VR1, oil consumption dropped to the nominal leakage around the oil pan gasket. I had initially thought the turbo oil seals were starting to fail. Answers on several forums suggested to try VR1. VR1 has a higher zinc content than most big name oils but not sure how it compares to the specialty brands.

Any reason you picked Liquid Molly over a ZDDP/zinc additive?

Not really. Would more ZDDP help reduce the lifter noise? Any recommendations?
