Tom, am I correct in assuming you were using the passenger side footwell's power outlet? If so, I wonder why you've had issues with it shutting down? My footwell connection in the Turbo S has always worked perfectly with the CTEK. Same for the Cayenne Turbo which also has a lithium LiFePO4. When I first got my car, my PPF guy inadvertently killed the lithium battery by keeping the key in his pocket and constantly triggering the wake-up mode as he moved around. That resulted in a crash course on lithium battery revivals and trickle chargers, some of which is captured in this very early Carpokes how-to....

As I mentioned in an earlier reply, the Turbo S (and probably the Cayenne) have UVP which will eventually cut off the outlet, but my experience is that it's 2-weeks or more before that happens. (It's only happened to me a couple of times since I generally will drive the car before UVP would kick in.) The GT4 apparently has no UVP protection because the digital maintainer (Granite Digital) is never blocked.
I'll go through my notes and see if I have any further info.
PS - is there another cigarette-lighter style power outlet in a 911 besides the one in the passenger footwell? I don't think there is in mine.

switched off or the vehicle key is removed."
And then this:
A - Suitable charging adapter
B - Unsuitable charging adapter
Danger of damage to the electrical system.
Only use suitable charging adapters
(A): Distance X between the ground connection and
the upper edge of the charging adapter must be
less than approx. 0.63 in. (16 mm).
Unsuitable charging adapters (B) with a distance
X greater than 0.63 in. (16 mm) between
the ground connection and the upper edge can
damage the 12-volt plug sockets"
Unlikely, but is it possible that the lighter adapter you were given was incorrect?

I connect mine on the frunk, positive to the pos post of the battery and the negative on the stud by the strut tower. You don't have to buy another tender if you already have a few. As long as it is no more than 3A-5A is ok to maintain. I bought a Porsche one, because I didn't have an extra one laying around. And if you have the rear steering, you do have a Li battery.

I use a CTek with this pigtail attached. I open the frunk to connect or disconnect, keeps it hidden but easily accessible.
