Since this is an interesting cluster discussion, I have a question about my 1990 944 S2 cluster that I recently pulled to fix the odometer. In the image below the rear of the tachaometer (2nd gauge from left) has 7 open holes in the circuit board. One of them has a little cover that's about to fall off. When I removed the cluster two others fell off in my hand, and I can see evidence that the others had little covers too.

Does anyone know the purpose of those covers, possibly just to keep dust out? I'm assuming they should be covered up again. Also, the image Tom used in his 911-style gauge bezel instructions shows a cluster with only 5 openings. The two lowest ones have a stud and nut through the holes. I guess that's just a different, possibly earlier design.

Thanks for any insight.

Yeah, they're just there to keep dust out. The glue is failing on them, so I'd be very surprised if you could find a car with all of them still on. I didn't bother to recover mine.

I'd have to look, but would guess the extra two holes on mine were for the boost gauge posts.

Ah, that makes perfect sense. Hadn't thought of that ;)
