I got home and messed with the belt and I've got it loose enough that I'm afraid to go any further and the pitch has not changed at all. If anything it sounds like it's louder at 2k rpm. For testing is it safe to just remove the idler to see if the sound goes away?
I also changed the tension in small increments on the accessory belt just to see if it would change pitch incase that's the source and that didn't change either.
At this point I'm confident I'm not too tight and likely on the looser side of things.

I don't know if they every go completely quiet. Your warm engine video sounded very quiet. Also, the cover really quiets things down too once its on. So comparing to other cars or videos - that's a challenge.Richey wrote: Tue May 19, 2026 3:51 pm I got home and messed with the belt and I've got it loose enough that I'm afraid to go any further and the pitch has not changed at all. I've been around a few well tensioned cars (apparently with the porsche tool) and they have all made a bit of a whine - so I'm not sure what's correct but I feel like you must be pretty close to excellent.

Over the years, I have done the service three times... plus when I had to R&R for something else.. and each time, same results
However... I only put on a new belt once. That belt does not need changing very often.. and the older the quieter lol
I would suggest not paying attention for a while. Drive the car a lot and forget about the whine; you may notice it disappear on its own

They 100% do. The more miles, the quieter.
And always listen on a warm engine, not cold
Sorry I should have specified a new belt and cold. But yes, a broken in belt will relaxdanmartinic wrote: Tue May 19, 2026 5:20 pmThey 100% do. The more miles, the quieter.

I went down the while you're in their rabbit hole and replaced everything. I replaced the balance shaft seals, the crank seal, all rollers, tensioners, belts, etc. I bought one of the 944 Online timing belt kits.AudiSport wrote: Wed May 20, 2026 7:58 pm I didn't read anything about you changing the rollers. I hope you did this.
So it finally quit raining (I have to reseal the hatch because it's delaminated) and my wife made a trip to Chick Fil A this morning like we usually do on Saturdays. This was the first time I've driven the car more than just around the block of my neighborhood since 2018 and probably the farthest drive since 2007 of about 4 miles.
By the time we returned home the whine had become noticeably quieter. I think with some more miles it's going to get a back to a normal level.
I've not put the timing belt cover back on yet. I wanted to get a 100 or so miles on the car and then re-check the belts before doing that. I did make a separate trip to the grocery store tonight and drove it about 5 miles. On the way home I managed to shred the accessory belt. I think I didn't have it quite tight enough. I'm going to pick up a new belt in the morning and see how that goes.

The balance shaft belt tension is not super critical. Over tighten it will wear the balance shaft bearings in the long run as well as making the classic (and annoying) belt wine. When running you can see the belt ‘bounce’ a little during rpm changes – that’s why Porsche used a roller to stop too much bounce.
It would have to be seriously loose to jump a tooth.
