1987 Porsche 944 Automatic Transmission
Guys, Does anyone know the correct amount of gear oil type and amount to service on the Automatic Transmission??? This is NOT to be confused with the transmission pan and filter service, I’m specifically referring to the gear fluid service, I DONT think this transmission HAS a fill AND a drain plug, All I can see is the 17mm filler plug at the top, Does the gear oil have to be sucked out from the fill plug and pumped back in through the same plug??? I’m getting multiple answers from people who are getting it confused with the Manual Gear box…

I could be wrong with the 944, but I had several VW's that had the same automatic. The process was to suck it out, I had a hand pump, and then refill enough to where the oil is level with the hole. Or if you put your pinky in there, you can touch the oil with your finger tip. I remember using 80w90 gear oil.
I think you’re RIGHT SpaceCad, I’ve looked ALL over the gearbox even with the 5sp manual side by side and the automatic has only 1 plug…. I never gave it a second thought, But you are ABSOLUTELY correct about this being a Vanagon Automatic…. Do you happen to remember ABOUT how much fluid goes in??? I can understand the fill till it spills…
Looking at the FSM dated 1986, the Type 087 auto trans uses about a litre (1.06 US qt) in the final drive section of SAE90 (fill to the edge of the filler plug).
Plug tightened to 20Nm (14 ft lb).
The manual neglects to mention how to fill the final drive section...

@Trouble I dont remember, but 0875 beat me to it anyways... Yeah, I had a string of Vanagons and one of them went through 3 of these automatics... I got fairly quick at swapping them out
The final drive fill process I described came down from the Vanagon gods... just fill slowly until the hole just starts to weep, then use your pinky to see if you can touch the oil. Done.

The PET only shows one plug on the auto's final drive so it must be a "two-way" plug.
Just a thought, if you check the level before you draw any of the old fluid out you'll have an idea of when it's "drained".
