(Mod...forgive me if this is a repeat of another's post...)
I am speculating that Porsche History is going to be repeated.....
SO, let's start out in 1965, with the 901 (911). It was met with huge pushback by the 356 folks. But, it did sell and the 356 was NLA, so, what the hell...buy one (or, more likely, a 912) and get on with it. the SWB 911's (1965-1968) were primitive and controversial. Then the LWB 911's came('69-'73)....more popular. Then ....the "G-Body" 911's (1974-1989) followed by the 964 and 993. (the high point of air cooled motor 911's)
I remember when you couldn't GIVE AWAY a SWB 911. they were cut up and 'wide bodied" and all manner of disrespect. The LWB 911's faired, slightly better, but still could be had, used, for very little $. (the 911S did much better, on this) The G-Body cars did dip into the 'teens', but remained somewhat valued. On and On....
NOW, we have the 996. Met with huge pushback by the Air-Cooled crowd...but it DID sell (lots) and the 993 was NLA, so, what the hell...buy one (or more likely, a Boxster) and get on with it. Then the 997 came....more popular. Then the 991 and 992 (etc). You will note, that as of very recently, you could barely GIVE AWAY a 996, they still can be had in the 'teens' ($). The 997's are doing a bit better etc etc...
What's by point ???? I speculate that at a future date, the 996's (especially the 99's) will be highly valued, just like the '65-'68 911's are, today. And that the 997's will follow the path of the LWB '69-'73, 911's. People will look back, fondly, on the rather analog 996's and appreciate there having forged a new path forward for Porsche. Just like the 1st air-cooled, flat 6, 911's....these 1st water cooled 911's will have their well deserved, day in the sun.

The 996 I would love to have is the 996RS, there was a time when they were cheapish but no longer. I recall parking beside one at the Nürbirgring is 2010 with my then new 997.2. (pic below). It was a very raw track car and they did not make it to this side of the pond as Porsche ddi not think there would be a demand for it and only about 500 were built....
