My 2021 will be coming off warranty next spring, and I'm starting to mull the idea of getting the Stage 1 (91 octane) Cobb tune for the car. Cobb seems pretty reputable and I have not heard of a lot of engines blowing up from their tunes. Cobb's tune is CARB approved, meaning it's smog legal in California, which is critical for me. I spoke to the Cobb rep at length at this summer's Werks Reunion and he pushed to get the 91 octane tune since that's what we have in California (despite living .9 miles from a gas station that sells 100 octane). The 91 octane tune is good for over 100 extra foot pounds of torque and almost 50hp.
Will it reduce resale value? Will I blow up my motor? Will it disrupt the balance of the car? Does any rational human need a car to be faster than a 992 Turbo S? Should I just wait until the next gen Turbo? Can the drivetrain handle it? My inner teenager loves the idea of adding 100 ft lbs., but my inner sexagenarian wonders if I'll black out if this car gets any faster.
Anyone here have any experience with Cobb?
Cobb Tune my Turbo S?

Anyone here have any experience with M-Engineering? Seems they are getting more power and adding a lot of programming features Cobb doesn't (like PSE switch control, auto-start/stop defeat, etc.). They do not appear to have the all-important CARB-certification though, unless I'm missing it.

I wonder if M-Engineering is just flying under the radar from an emissions perspective, whereas Cobb was big enough to catch the eye of the government and now needs to toe the line? My dealer told me they could not disable auto start/stop on my car, citing emissions scrutiny, and I imagine this settlement agreement is why Cobb isn't offering it either....

Tom, I have the M-Engineering tune for the GT4 and am very pleased with the tune and the process. They will customize the tune files if necessary too. (Fuel types, amount of power, auto-start/stop, etc.)
The install is via wi-fi using a laptop through the OBDII dongle they supply. Install was easy and it's also easy to go back to stock. No remote device but I didn't want one anyway. As I understand it, some Porsche engineers (current and ex) are involved in M-Engineering. I think M-E is closer to Porsche than others but that's just a guess.
I researched several other tune providers and also asked around, after which I settled on the M-Engineering as the best for me. I went through Flat 6 Motorsports for the purchase but also talked directly to M-Engineering. Both were very helpful in answering questions and filling in the blanks of which I had several. Also, I can always contact either Flat 6 or M-E for consults if needed. As it stands now, if I were to do the Turbo S, I would use M-Engineering again.
Below is a copy of some of the data, specs & info I pieced together last year from their websites last year.

Start/stop is easily handled, either with a TDesign9 module or via programming using tools like Thinkdiag. I had one of those modules for my '17 Cayenne and it worked perfectly.

As best I can tell, TDesign9 only has modules for the 991/718 style knobs with IOSS+ knobs? I haven't bit the bullet yet on a programmer -- hoping to see others confirm one of the tools works on a 992 Turbo S, then might jump in.wkearney99 wrote: ↑Sun Nov 24, 2024 10:34 am Start/stop is easily handled, either with a TDesign9 module or via programming using tools like Thinkdiag. Ah, fair point, I do not know their current offerings. Though Vlad did travel to my location and used my Cayenne as the basis for the programming of that module. It was a pretty nifty little box. It basically listened on the LIN bus for the center console module and recorded any changes in state. And it would re-play those as button presses when the car was restarted. This meant the car saw nothing more than what looked like legit button presses. It acted just as a passive connection and did not interfere with any other messages between the car and the button module.
