I'm staring this thread to honor the ideals of the thread's title (that I borrowed from Hagerty and Larry Webster) to specifically thank the dedicated people at Hagerty who are doing all they can to preserve our automotive and driving culture along with the freedoms it defines and embraces. It's their overarching mission. Also, I wanted to give a forum for others' thoughts and involvement in the endeavor!

The thread is about everything associated with the title, so please add posts, pics, links, personal anecdotes, etc. - whatever adds to the notion of Never Stop Driving.

For me, this first post is specifically in thanks to all the incredible efforts in that respect over the past decades by Hagerty, specifically McKeel and Soon Hagerty, Hagery Media headed by Larry Webster, Hagerty contributors and co-conspirators Jay Leno, Aaron Rogers, Wayne Carini, Csaba Csere, Rob Seigel and many others who have written great car and car culture stories. It's also in thanks to the countless legislative efforts being made at all levels to preserve and further the car and driving culture we Carpokians love.

The above applies double to the many others behind the scenes who work for and are a part of that Hagerty car culture and are at the forefront of a movement that continues to gather strength.

Along those lines, today's weekly article from Larry Webster's "Never Stop Driving" missive is attached. It's a timely piece for those of us who love to actually drive our cars or for those of us who actively support that notion - IE: everyone at Carpokes.

Reminds me of a quote from none other than Jeremy Clarkson. People don't quite understand the connection we have to cars and driving....

“You're a car, but most of all, what you are, what you've become, is a mate. And that's what makes a car special. That's what makes a car great. You start to think of it as a person."

Hagerty's first ever Road of the Year award was featured in the last issue of their superb auto lovers' magazine. The new annual feature is meant to encourage Hagerty Drivers Club members and all automotive enthusiasts to get off the freeways and explore a great road in their own region. Couldn't agree more!

Their first annual Road of the Year winner, written by noted automotive author Aaron Robinson: "California’s Highway 33. This epic two-lane road is within easy reach of residents and visitors to the Los Angeles area."

Larry Webster - Fri Jul 19th:

This month's Hagerty Drivers Club magazine is devoted to DIY. Larry's weekly missive today is titled "Do It Yourself" and outlines the current mag and much of what they have to offer on their YouTube channel in that regard. (There is so much DIY on YouTube from so many sources!)

Great stuff! I suppose there will be a time when I stop driving .

Not yet though. Just about to jump into the car for a 200 mile drive and another 200 back o Sunday. That’s why the wheels are round and it square:)

Change of pace.

From Hagerty Media this morning comes a bit of a look at the many extreme and wildly built "vehicles" in George Miller's latest edition to the Mad Max series - Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga

It outlines some of the creativity, the incredible machines and drive-trains (a 7-cylinder radial-engined motorcycle!), a 3-bike chariot (with a bit of Aussie novelty racing history dating 100 years ago), incredible stunts and characters - the list goes on. An extensive photo gallery attached to the article too. Fun read!!

George Miller says the cars themselves are characters, and “they’re extensions of the characters". You see it right through the ‘Mad Max’ films.

"...Finally, the Octoboss himself appears on an airborne motorcycle, held aloft by a nightmarish black octo-kite with long black tentacles that stream behind him in the sky. When the Octoboss gets too close for comfort, Furiosa finally activates the Bommy Knocker ..."

"It took 78 days over a ninth-month period to shoot the exhilarating chase sequence, and it required over 100 stunt performers to pull the whole thing off."

Miller eschews CGI - real vehicles, real drivers, real stunts.

There's a bit of backstory to Miller's previous life as a doctor and the auto carnage he witnessed 50+ years ago in Queensland when the long flat roads stretching endlessly had no rules. (You see much of that in the original 1979 'Mad Max' film.) The gas crisis was unfolding at the time too - the foundation for the Mad Max saga had its beginning.

I haven't seen the latest film but will soon. All five of George Miller's Mad Max series films, beginning with Mel Gibson in 1979's Mad Max, are much fun to watch.

Cheers!

Back Tracking a bit, Highway 33 out of Ojai, Meiners Oaks and up through Wheeler Springs is a great drive. We used to do general vehicle evaluations through there, nice roads, little to no traffic, some great vista's as well.
