Re 2014 991 - Recently dealer turned light off but it came back on. Ran scan ourselves and it shows fault code 000401 and "Thorax airbag driver's side. Short circuit to ground." Turned light off ourselves and it came back on. Any suggestions as to where to begin looking for the issue will be appreciated.

Welcome! This thorax airbag "short circuit to ground" tormented a buddy of mine for ages.
The PITA way, (big yellow clip under the seat.... the cable running from seat buckle to yellow connector under seat.)... Here is a video that goes over it in detail:
One person bought a new buckle and cable that fixed it: Buckle and cable [997 803 183 01].
Here is a big write up on what one guy did on a UK forum. Pretty similar process. Involved buying a new buckle and cable
