I am the caretaker of my dad's old 450SL, as I've mentioned before. Last fall, it failed California smog pretty miserably and I'm only now getting around to working on it. I was tempted to sneak it over to the smog station on year-old plates, but instead stopped by the AAA office to see if I could talk them into a one-day registration permit to get it smogged. I had no idea how easy it is. As long as the registration fees are paid, you can get up to 3 one-day registration cards per visit, for free. They are only valid for 60 days after issued, and you need to complete the date on them for the day you are driving the car, but there is apparently no limit to how many they will issue. I could go back in 3 days and get 3 more she said, no problem. You are only supposed to use them to get to and from the inspection, which is just fine for me, though I suspect that's pretty hard to enforce unless you are out driving at midnight or a hundred miles from home or something. Anywho, just thought I'd share in case that's news to anyone! One less excuse for not getting that car smogged finally.
